Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a four-wicket win against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in match No. 3 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, on Sunday, March 23.

Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to bowl first on a fresh surface. In the first over, Khaleel Ahmed bowled three dot balls to Rohit Sharma before dismissing the Indian skipper off the fourth. The left-arm spinner dismissed debutant Ryan Rickelton in his second over. Ravichandran Ashwin’s reunion with CSK turned out to be memorable as he got the better of Will Jacks in his first over.

Having lost three wickets inside the first five overs, Mumbai needed a partnership and it came from stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. They added 51 off 36 balls to consolidate the Mumbai innings. However, Noor Ahmad single-handedly brought Chennai back into the game by picking up four wickets leading up to the backend of the innings.

From 87/3 in the 11th over, MI slumped to 128/8 at the end of the 18th. A late assault from Deepak Chahar (28* off 15 balls) helped the visitors get past the 150-run mark. Mumbai finished at 155/9 at the end of their 20 overs. Noor Ahmad starred with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4/18 in four overs.

In reply, Chennai lost the wicket of Impact Player Rahul Tripathi in the second over. Gaikwad joined Rachin Ravindra in the middle and the duo added a 67-run partnership off just 37 balls. However, it was primarily a one-man show from Gaikwad, who amassed 53 off just 26 balls as Rachin played the second fiddle.

Young debutant Vignesh Puthur dismissed Gaikwad in the eighth over against the run of play. Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda also became victims of Puthur as the left-arm wrist-spinner gave Mumbai hopes of a memorable win. Sam Curran played a loose shot to get dismissed by Will Jacks as Chennai needed another 40 runs to win off the last 35 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja stuck around with Rachin, who was oozing composure from the other end. They added a crucial 36-run partnership off 27 balls to take CSK to the brink. The fans got to see MS Dhoni walking out to bat after Jadeja was run out in the penultimate over with just four runs left for a win. The legendary cricketer blocked two deliveries from Naman Dhir before Rachin hit a six off Mitchell Santner to take his team to victory with five balls to spare. The Kiwi all-rounder finished unbeaten on 65 off 45 balls.
