IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell fined 25% match fee, gets demerit point for code of conduct breach vs CSK

IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell fined 25% match fee, gets demerit point for code of conduct breach vs CSK

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL (Indian Premier League) code of conduct during Match 22 of the IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Mullanpur on Tuesday.

Maxwell’s offence falls under Article 2.2 of the IPL code of conduct, which relates to the abuse of fixtures and fittings during the match — an offence categorised under Level 1. According to the IPL’s official release, the cricketer admitted to the breach and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. As per IPL protocol, decisions regarding Level 1 breaches are final and binding.

While the exact details of the incident have not been revealed, actions under Article 2.2 typically include moments of frustration where a player might damage equipment or stadium property, such as aggressively swinging a bat and hitting advertising boards, kicking stumps, or damaging dressing room fittings.

Maxwell’s dismal batting run continues

Meanwhile, in the IPL match, PBKS batted first and posted 219/6 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant century from young opener Priyansh Arya, who smashed 103 off 42 balls. Maxwell, coming in at No. 6, was dismissed for just 1 run off two balls by Ravi Ashwin, via caught and bowled.

Although his contribution with the bat was underwhelming, the Australian redeemed himself somewhat with the ball, claiming the important wicket of Rachin Ravindra, who was stumped after adding 36 runs to the tally. He bowled just two overs, finishing with figures of 1/11.

CSK’s defeat marked their fourth consecutive loss, pushing them down to ninth place in the standings, while PBKS held on to the fourth spot. Maxwell’s fine is the latest in a string of penalties handed out this IPL season. Other players, including Rishabh Pant, Rajat Patidar, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Riyan Parag, and Digvesh Singh, have also been penalised for breaches such as slow over-rates and similar Level 1 offences.
