‘I wouldn’t say Delhi Capitals bowled poorly’ – Anjum Chopra analyses DC-W’s bowling performance after defeat to GG-W

Match 17 of the Women’s Premier League 2025 witnessed the Delhi Capitals clash with the Gujarat Giants at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, March 7. The Giants won the game in a thrilling fashion by five wickets and three balls remaining.

DC-W put up a strong total of 177 on the board batting first, thanks to skipper Meg Lanning’s outstanding 92 runs off 57 balls. In reply, the Giants suffered an early blow in the form of Dayalan Hemalatha (1 off 7). However, Beth Mooney (44 off 35) and Harleen Deol combined to form a critical 85-run partnership to bring their team back in the chase. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Harleen kept on scoring and ended up unbeaten on 70 off 49 balls.

The DC-W bowlers could not capitalise on the advantage served up to them early on. In the middle overs, the required run rate kept rising. At one stage, 66 runs were needed off 36 balls with eight wickets in hand. Yet, the Giants found their way and reached the target with three balls to spare.

Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Anjum Chopra analysed Delhi’s bowling performance. She felt that the team did not bowl badly. In fact, they executed their plans well, but the Giants’ batting took the game away from them.

“I think Gujarat Giants batted well, but I wouldn’t say Delhi Capitals bowled poorly. They have one of the best bowling line-ups, and they executed their plans well. They built pressure, stayed in the game, and weren’t bowling outside off-stump or straying from their field placements. Players like Deandra Dottin and Ashleigh Gardner have the power to clear the field, and they did just that,” said Chopra on JioHotstar.

DC-W have played all their games now. They have a 5-3 win-loss record and are at the top of the table, qualifying for the playoffs. On the other hand, GG-W are second on the table with a 4-3 win-loss record and have one more game to go against Mumbai Indians Women on Monday, March 10. They are also in contention to make the playoffs.
