I would be hugely proud to represent the country in a big game like WTC final: Beau Webster

Australian all-rounder Beau Webster is determined to get selected in the starting XI for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, starting on Wednesday, June 11. Pat Cummins-led Australia are set to defend the WTC title against South Africa at The Home of Cricket.

Webster made his maiden Test appearance against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) earlier this year. The 31-year-old scored 57 and 39* in the two innings and picked up the wicket of Shubman Gill. In Sri Lanka, he scored 54 runs from two innings and picked up two wickets. He is averaging 50 with the bat and 24 with the ball.

Notably, star all-rounder Cameron Green has returned to the Australian side after being sidelined for months following his back surgery. However, he is set to feature as a specialist batter. This keeps Webster in the selectors’ radar to play as the lone seam-bowling all-rounder against the Proteas.

“I’d be hugely proud to represent the country in such a big game. The boys look forward to this fixture and the two-year cycles means there is a lot of cricket to get to this point and being a part of that I’m really proud of. I’ll be doing everything I can to try and play and show everyone what I can do,” Webster told ICC Digital.

To prepare for English conditions, Webster spent May playing county cricket for Warwickshire. He got accustomed to the Dukes ball and unfamiliar surfaces. His aggregated important runs in the middle-order and bowled consistently in good lines and lengths, holding ends up for the specialist bowlers. The Tasmania player said that the stint has helped him hone his skills in English conditions.

“I was lucky enough to play four games for Warwickshire in some different conditions with the Dukes ball. I think it was only beneficial for both my batting and bowling and I feel like I’m hitting the ball as well as I ever have and hopefully that can continue if I get the nod (against South Africa),” Webster said.
