‘I still feel like they’ve got a great chance of winning in England’ – James Anderson dissects The Ashes loss vs Australia

England veteran James Anderson admitted that the The Ashes carries immense pressure, with players often judged heavily on their performances. The England cricket team, led by Ben Stokes, suffered a 4-1 defeat in the five-Test series against Australia national cricket team between November 2025 and January 2026.

England had travelled to Australia with hopes of reclaiming the Ashes for the first time since 2015, especially as they were perceived to be facing a relatively less formidable Australian side. However, Stokes’ team was undone by poor preparation, questionable selection decisions, and a lack of cricketing nous, while Australia’s more experienced unit capitalised on these shortcomings.

England’s struggles were further compounded by off-field distractions, including reports of drinking incidents and a controversial mid-series break in Noosa.

“Obviously, I think the Ashes series are huge and everyone gets judged. We’ve seen the backlash of losing in Australia quite heavily. I thought they had a great chance of causing an upset or winning, certainly, out in Australia. I still feel like they’ve got a great chance of winning in England, as well,” said Anderson in pre-season media day as quoted by France 24.

English cricket chiefs opted to retain Stokes as Test captain, with head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key also keeping their positions despite the heavy Ashes defeat. When asked whether England had made the right decision in sticking with the trio, Anderson remained non-committal.

“They’ve decided that that’s the right way to go. We’ve seen it in the past where people have lost their jobs after the Ashes series and maybe knee-jerk reactions to what that is,” said Anderson.

The right-arm pacer was, however, encouraged by the performances of fellow England seamer Josh Tongue during the Australia tour. At the same time, he expressed concern over the future of express quick Jofra Archer, given his ongoing struggles with injuries and fitness.

“I love Josh Tongue. I think he’s a serious bowler. And I’m sure he’ll play many, many more Tests. Jofra, I’m not sure, with his injuries and T20 commitments, with his Test career, what the future looks like for that,” said Anderson.
