Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan has been named as a replacement in the Indian Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka, after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out due to a toe stress reaction. The first Test begins at Galle on August 15, 2026, and Sarfaraz is set to join the squad in Colombo before the team moves to the venue.

Sudharsan picked up the injury during the India A tour of Sri Lanka in July 2026. He had made a strong impression in that series, scoring 132 in the opening match, but was unable to recover in time to be considered for the senior assignment.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was assessed as a potential middle-order option, but his returns in the India A series offered little to work with. He posted scores of 22, 1 and 13 across that campaign. With spin-friendly conditions anticipated in Sri Lanka, the selectors and team management opted for a batter whose record on such surfaces gave them greater confidence, and Sarfaraz met that requirement.

What does Sarfaraz Khan bring to the India Test squad?

Sarfaraz holds one of the strongest First-Class records among active Indian batters. Across 62 matches at that level, he averages 64.73, a number that has kept him in selection conversations even during extended absences from the Test side.

He made his Test debut for India in February 2024 against England at home, contributing half-centuries in each of his first three innings. Against New Zealand in October 2024, he posted 150, though a lean run followed across his next four innings. His most recent Test appearance was in Mumbai against New Zealand in November 2024. Across six Tests in total, he has accumulated 372 runs.

Sarfaraz was included in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia across the 2024-25 season but was not given a game in any of the five Tests. In 2025, he scored 92 during the India A series against England, yet that performance did not earn him a place in the senior squad for the tour that followed.

What is next for Sarfaraz Khan after this recall?

This call-up marks Sarfaraz’s return to the Test squad for the first time since the home series against New Zealand in late 2024. He will now look to convert this opportunity into a place in the playing XI when the first Test gets underway at Galle on August 15, 2026.

The selectors have pointed to the spin-heavy nature of conditions expected in Sri Lanka as a key factor behind his inclusion. Whether he features in the final eleven will depend on the combination the team management settles on ahead of the first Test. His domestic record and recent India A experience place him in a strong position to make that case.
