Guernsey’s T20 World Cup qualification hopes alive after ICC review

Guernsey’s hopes of reaching the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup are alive after the ICC reviewed the qualification pathway for the tournament and awarded the island side a place in the next phase of 2028 qualification. The revised pathway overturns what had been Guernsey’s position under the original rules, which had left them without a route forward following their final defeat in Cyprus.

The change follows Guernsey’s campaign at the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier A in Cyprus, held from May 16 to May 23, 2026. Guernsey won all four group matches before Jersey defeated them by four wickets in the final on May 23, 2026. Under the original qualification structure, that result had ended their campaign, but the ICC review has altered that outcome. Guernsey Cricket manager Rob Thomson described the announcement as ‘surreal’ and said his side had proved its quality.

“I’m still digesting the announcement. We went to Cyprus and did really well, but we missed out, and the group having one qualification spot is a brutal format. It’s just the way it is with the numbers and depth of the European cricket at a sub-regional level. But I think we proved that there is depth and quality is also here in some of the non-traditional sides. We romped through our sub-group, and I think we can certainly go there and target some wins,” said Thomson to BBC.

“I’ve watched Denmark, Spain, and Portugal, and on our day we can be better than those sides. The cricket we’ve played over the last few years, and some of the performances that we’ve put in and the individuals that we’ve got, I think we we’re going to be able to give it a great shot,” he added.

The ICC’s review of the 2028 T20 World Cup qualification pathway has directly changed Guernsey’s standing in the process. Where the original rules would have concluded their campaign after the Cyprus final, the revised pathway now places them in the next qualification phase, which is expected to take place in 2027.

The 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from October 21 to November 19, 2028. Guernsey will now continue their qualifying campaign with that tournament as their target. Thomson reflected on what the opportunity means for his squad.

How has Guernsey performed in recent T20 World Cup qualifying cycles?

Guernsey have had a mixed record across recent qualification campaigns. They won the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C between August 21 and August 28, 2024, which marked their previous progression to this stage of the process. In 2025, the Netherlands ended their campaign and Guernsey did not secure a place at the 2026 T20 World Cup, which was held in India and Sri Lanka.

Their group-stage showing in Cyprus in May 2026, where they went unbeaten across four matches before the final, demonstrated the continued development of cricket in Guernsey. The ICC review now gives Thomson’s side a second opportunity to advance, with the 2027 qualification phase their next confirmed step on the road to Australia and New Zealand.
