MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir are two of the most renowned cricketers to have represented India. The wicketkeeper-batter won three ICC titles as captain, and Gambhir was the highest run-getter in the finals of two of those events.
On Sunday, March 8, Gambhir became the first Indian coach to win back-to-back ICC titles. The Men in Blue won the 2026 T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by 96 runs, defeating Mitchell Santner-led New Zealand in front of more than one lakh fans.
After the epic win, Dhoni returned to social media following a long hiatus and posted a picture of the triumphant Indian team. He also congratulated the players, but what stood out was his small message for Gambhir. The ex-India captain said that the smile looks great on his former teammate.
“History gets created at Ahmedabad, big congratulations to the team and support staff and to all the fans of the Indian Cricket Team worldwide. Such a pleasure to see all of you play. Coach Sahab, smile looks great on you. Intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done. Enjoy guys (BUMRAH ke baare mein kuch na likhoon tou hi acha hai. CHAMPION BOWLER),” Dhoni captioned the post.
Gambhir, basking in the glory of scripting history in the T20 World Cup, responded to Dhoni’s comment, saying: “And what a reason to smile, great seeing you.”
Dhoni was in attendance for both the semi-final and the final that India played. Ahead of the summit clash, Dhoni brought the T20 World Cup trophy to the field alongside Rohit Sharma, who was the captain of the Indian team which won the previous edition of the tournament in 2024.
India were asked to bat first on Sunday, and powered by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson, the Asian giants posted a mammoth 255/5. In reply, New Zealand were bundled out for 159 in 19 overs.
