The coveted Ranji Trophy is India’s premier domestic red-ball competition. Many renowned cricketers did well for the national team, but never won the Ranji Trophy.
The first edition of the Ranji Trophy was played in the 1934-35 season under the name- “Cricket Championship of India,” before it was named the following year. Over the years, the tournament has produced some sensational cricketing talents who have gone on to achieve memorable feats in the international arena.
In this article, CricTracker takes a look at three players who fared brilliantly for the Indian team but surprisingly never won the coveted Ranji Trophy title.

3. VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman made a name for himself in the Test arena by playing some memorable knocks against Australia, including the famous 281, at the iconic Eden Gardens. He finished with a tally of 8,781 and 2,338 runs from 134 Tests and 86 ODIs, respectively. Laxman played 53 Ranji Trophy games for Hyderabad. However, he could not guide his state team to the title.
2. Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh played key roles in India’s triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is one of the finest spin-bowling all-rounders to have played for India. He scored 1900, 8,701, and 1,177 runs in 40 Tests, 304 ODIs, and 58 T20Is, respectively. Yuvraj represented Punjab in domestic cricket. He achieved several incredible feats for his nation and also played some memorable knocks in the Ranji Trophy. However, he didn’t have the privilege of winning the coveted title.

MS Dhoni is arguably the most revered cricketer in the world. He retired from international cricket in August 2020 and only plays in the Indian Premier League. However, his craze is still amazing as fans flock to the stadiums to watch him in action for the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni is the most successful Indian captain, having led the Men in Blue to three ICC titles. He amassed 17,266 runs in international cricket, having made 538 appearances. However, he never won the Ranji Trophy title in his domestic career.
