Former South Africa speedster Wayne Parnell picked a strong all-time ODI XI, comprising some of the greatest stalwarts the sport has ever seen.

Parnell, who recently won the World Championship of Legends league with South Africa Champions, picked the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and former South Africa captain Hashim Amla as his openers. The talismanic Virat Kohli secured the important No. 3 spot in the batting lineup. Consistent players like AB de Villiers and Michael Hussey found places in the middle order.

Parnell picked former ODI World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni to lead his side. In the bowling department, Parnell picked the famous Pakistan pace duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. The enigmatic Brett Lee also earned a place in the side. Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan made the cut as the specialist spinner.

Muralitharan and Afridi would be a formidable spin-bowling duo, that could wreak havoc, even in conditions which are not very conducive to the tweakers. The pace-bowling troika of Lee, Akram, and Younis would ensure that the opposition batters won’t get any respite.

Parnell played six Tests, 73 ODIs, and 56 T20Is for the South African national team. He represented the Proteas for the first time in January in a T20I against Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. The Port Elizabeth-born has not played international cricket since March 2023.

In the World Championship of Legends, Parnell emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Peter Siddle. He took 11 wickets in seven matches, averaging 15.45 with a strike rate of 11.45. The left-arm fast bowler bagged two crucial wickets in the semi-finals against Australia and won the Player of the Match award. Parnell followed it up with two wickets in the summit clash against Pakistan. South Africa Champions triumphed by nine wickets to lift the title.
