Fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODIs against the West Indies after sustaining a right hamstring strain during England’s innings-and-45-run victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last week. The 27-year-old pacer will now undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) medical staff to return for the upcoming five-match Test series against India starting June 20.

With the first ODI against the West Indies set to begin at Edgbaston on Thursday, the hosts will go ahead without naming a replacement for Atkinson, who joins Jofra Archer, who was earlier ruled out due to a thumb injury. Archer had sustained the injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, with left-arm seamer Luke Wood drafted in as his replacement. Despite the setback, the hosts consist of a strong pace unit for the ODIs, with Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, and Wood.

Atkinson picked up the injury during the one-off Test against Zimbabwe, where he bowled impressively, ending with figures of 2-58 in the first innings and 1-17 in the second. However, he was seen in visible discomfort on the final day of the match, managing only three overs before being forced to stop.

While he has not been selected for the T20I leg of the West Indies series, but is a crucial member of England’s Test plans. His rehabilitation is being closely monitored to ensure he gets back to full fitness ahead of the five-Test series against India. Atkinson had a brilliant run in 2024, where he picked 54 wickets across 11 Tests last year, including a sensational 12-wicket haul on debut at Lord’s.

Harry Brook, Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Tom Hartley, Saqib Mahmood, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood
