ENG vs WI 2025: England announce Playing XI for first ODI to be held in Edgbaston

ENG vs WI 2025: England announce Playing XI for first ODI to be held in Edgbaston

England have announced their playing XI for the first ODI of the three-match series against West Indies, starting at Edgbaston on Thursday, May 29. This will be England’s first white-ball assignment under the new captain, Harry Brook, who takes over from Jos Buttler following the team’s disappointing group-stage exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, veteran spinner Adil Rashid is set to make his 150th ODI appearance.

The post-Champions Trophy, players like Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt dropped from the ODI squad following poor performances in the tournament. Livingstone, in particular, had an underwhelming time in the UAE, scoring just 33 runs, leading to his exclusion from both the ODI and T20I squads. Salt’s poor form in the 50-over format has also seen him miss out, despite retaining his place in the T20 leg.

In their place, the selectors have placed faith in talents like Jamie Smith, who will open the batting alongside Ben Duckett. Jacob Bethell also finds himself in the Playing XI and is returning straight from playing the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The middle order will also see the presence of Joe Root and Butler, with the latter to take up the wicketkeeping duties. Batting all-rounder Will Jacks has also made it to the cut and is expected to add depth to this team.

Notably, ace pacer Jofra Archer was ruled out due to a thumb injury sustained during the IPL 2025 while playing for the Rajasthan Royals. Meanwhile, Gus Atkinson, who was decent during the Test win over Zimbabwe, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. While Archer has been replaced by Luke Wood, no replacement has been named for Atkinson. With the duo out of the series, the pace department will now be led by Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, and Saqib Mahmood.

England Playing XI

Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid.
