Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has opined that Shubman Gill‘s captaincy is a blend of three former Indian captains. Interestingly, as per the legendary cricketer, neither of them were MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, or Rohit Sharma.
The overlapping feature for all three was that they had led India to a Test series triumph in England.
“It might be pertinent to note that India have won a Test series in England only thrice. In 1971 under Ajit Wadekar, in 1986 under Kapil Dev, and in 2007 under Rahul Dravid. All three were the coolest skippers one could ever hope for. The laconic style of Wadekar, the rip-roaring yet controlled style of Kapil, and the intense and thoughtful method of Dravid,” stated Gavaskar, as per his his column for Mid-Day.
Gavaskar then went onto describe which particular moments from the series made Gill feel like the amalgam of Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, and Rahul Dravid.
“Not once did these three ever get excited, whatever the situation and that calm certainty was infectious. Shubman Gill in Birmingham looked like an amalgam of these three. Intense and iconic while scoring a double-century and a century, rip-roaring as well as thoughtful as his bowlers ran through the England batting in both the innings,” commented Gavaskar.
The ongoing series between England and India is Gill’s first as full-time Test captain. Despite an underwhelming outing at Lord’s, he is currently leading the run-scoring charts across both teams with 607 runs in six innings at a stunning average of 101.16.
The Gill-led unit currently trails 2-1 to England after going down by five wickets and 22 runs in the first and third Tests, respectively. The win at Edgbaston was a remarkable one for the Indian team. Gill broke all sorts of records after scoring 269 and 161, respectively.
The fourth Test is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, July 23. The eagerly-anticipated contest will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester.
