India batter Karun Nair hasn’t been enjoying a dream return to the national side, as he scored his fourth consecutive low score with his dismissal in the second innings of the second Test against England being played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham. Nair, who batted at No. 3 in this match, edged a full-ish delivery by Brydon Carse as wicketkeeper Jamie Smith completed a regulation catch behind the stumps on Day 3.

This was a perfectly set-up wicket for the English youngster as he had been constantly troubling Nair with short and bouncy deliveries. After a few balls found the outside edge but remained away from the fielders at the slip cordon, Nair had made up his mind to drive anything that was pitched even slightly fuller, which also resulted in him getting a boundary between the point and the gully region in the previous over.

The next over, Carse was smart enough to force Nair into drive once again, and as the batter saw a full-length ball coming his way, his natural instinct went away with the shot, only to find the outside edge, as he had to make his way back to the pavillion after adding 26 runs off 46 balls.

Speaking of Nair’s form in the series, the Headingley Test saw the Karnataka-born register scores of 0 and 20 while batting at No. 6, a game that India lost. Coming into Birmingham, the management tried to promote Nair up the order, as he joined Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease at No. 3 and looked extremely good for his 31 runs, but was unfortunately taken off guard by a short ball on the 50th delivery he faced. Then in the second innings, Carse did the job yet again.

So far, Nair has aggregated 77 runs from the couple of games in the series, which is slightly concerning since he entered the set-up with a lot of promise on the back of his splending domestic performances. It will be interesting to see if the experienced batter gets a chance for the third Test or the management brings in someone like Abhimanyu Easwaran or B Sai Sudharsan.
