ECB lifts media ban on players following Ashes debacle

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has lifted the media ban it imposed on its centrally contracted players following a disappointing Ashes campaign in Australia this winter. England suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals as they once again failed to regain the famous urn.

Following the Ashes debacle, the ECB restricted its players from speaking to the media whilst representing their respective county. The decision was made to make sure the senior figures within the ECB like Managing Director of Men’s Cricket Rob Key and Chief Executive Richard Gould could address the media first.

The decision was taken to make sure that the players were not discussing the future of the team and the coaching staff in front of the media before the ECB bosses. However, due to the scrutiny that followed, the cricketing body has uplifted the ban, following the players to now discuss the ins and outs of their tour Down Under. 

With the English domestic season just around the corner, the county sides will all have their media day soon. According to reports, Surrey have theirs on March 17 while the other 17 sides will have their media day later in March in early April.

As things stand, the ECB are currently conducting a formal review into the Ashes campaign. Despite strong performances at the recently-concluded T20 World Cup where they made the semi-finals, England head coach Brendon McCullum has come under heavy scrutiny for performances on the field and player behaviour off it. 

The Kiwi, however, is set to remain in charge of the team and is expected to be given the chance to win the Ashes in 2027 on home soil.

England are set to kickstart their home summer with a three-match Test series against New Zealand before welcoming India for a white-ball tour. The Men in Blue are set to play five T20Is and three ODIs in the United Kingdom between July 1 and 19.
