West Indies cricket was one of the fiercest cricketing nations and they set the cornerstone for modern cricket. But the team has struggled in this era and has only shown their reserved best in the T20 format. In a bid to reclaim their lost glitter, Cricket West Indies (CWI) is coming up with new reforms aided by technology to sprout out young talent and lay the foundation for a better tomorrow.

To identify and develop the best cricketing talent at home, CWI is planning to bring a data-driven scouting system. The talent identification will be based purely on data with a structured, analytical approach which will be under the watchful eye of senior talent managers, territorial talent identifiers, and a network of scouts. The same will be laid into action with the upcoming West Indies Championship.

“We are moving beyond just relying on what we see on scorecards. This system ensures that performances are seen with context and with a focus on the skill sets displayed, tactical acumen and game awareness. We are collecting real-time data, analysing performances consistently, and making informed decisions about player development,” said CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe.

The territorial identifiers consist of six individuals headed by former West Indies cricketer, Ramnaresh Sarwan, who will also look after Guyana. Others are  Henderson Broomes (Barbados), Delroy Morgan (Jamaica), Samuel Spencer (Leeward Islands), Gibran Mohammed (Trinidad & Tobago) and Craig Emmanuel (Windward Islands) for the company. The senior talent managers are Jamal Smith (men’s cricket) and Ann Browne-John (women’s cricket).

The key responsibilities of the territorial talent identifiers are:

Scouting and evaluation: Attending matches and training sessions to assess players’ technical skills, physical attributes, and mental strength.
Reporting and analysis: Compiling detailed scouting reports and maintaining player performance records.
Collaboration: working closely with coaches, selectors, and high-performance staff to refine the development pathway.
