Charlie Dean feels she has grown immensely as London Spirit captain heading into The Hundred

Charlie Dean, who deputised well as England skipper this summer when Nat Sciver-Brunt was injured and seems her long-term successor, feels she has transformed as a leader in the months leading up to The Hundred 2026. The 25-year-old England all-rounder is set to captain London Spirit again as the domestic T20 tournament begins Tuesday, July 21.

In the group stages, which run until 12 August, every side plays eight matches. Heather Knight taking on a new role as general manager means Dean gets another opportunity to grow in the role without the burden of handling an injured mentor on the field. Knight’s transition to an off-field position frees up space for Dean to operate independently while still having the former England captain’s guidance available.

“I’ve really enjoyed this year. I’m in a place where I know my game quite well, and I can think about other people, and I feel like I’ve had a lot of personal development. I’ve gained a bit more confidence with my public speaking, and bits like that … things that would probably have challenged me a lot more in previous years,” said Dean as quoted by ESPN.

Dean credits Knight’s influence on her evolution

Knight’s impact on Dean’s captaincy journey runs deep. The pair are now teammates at Somerset, where Knight joined as a player and advisor in 2025. Their connection extends beyond the domestic circuit to international duty, where Dean has become a critical figure in England’s leadership structure.

“So opportunities to captain are few and far between, but I always relished the chance to step up in other leadership ways. This has been a perfect opportunity for me to test out how I’ve grown, and see where it takes me,” said Dean.

Dean acknowledged the difficulty of balancing international commitments with domestic leadership but stressed how valuable this role at London Spirit has been. Knight’s presence in a mentoring capacity offers Dean the best of both worlds, autonomy on the field during matches, and wisdom from one of England’s greatest leaders off it.

The tournament’s opening match took place Tuesday, July 21, when MI London, who are the most successful side in both competitions with three men’s titles and two women’s trophies, played against Sunrisers Leeds. The final will take place at Lord’s on Sunday, 16 August. Dean will hope her continued growth as captain guides London Spirit deep into the competition.
