The thrilling ODI cricket carnival is in its full swing as Australia (AUS) and England (ENG) clashed with each other in Match 4 of the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, the much-awaited match between the archrivals took place on Saturday, February 22, at the Gaddafi Stadium, in Lahore. Both teams were entering the mega ICC (International Cricket Council) event after their recent losses in the ODI format while playing away from home.

While Australia suffered a setback after losing the ODI series to Sri Lanka, England were whitewashed by India by a 3-0 margin. Hence with both the teams seeking a winning start, the battle turned out to be an absolute humdinger. Australia won the toss and decided to have a go with the ball first. Probably they were counting on the dew factor which may play a part later on in the evening.

Even though they managed to pick two early wickets, Joe Root made a vital fifty to bail England out of early jolts. Except for the late finishing touch by Jofra Archer in the final stages of the innings, it was the Ben Duckett show throughout for the English camp. The explosive opener ensured to keep scoring runs briskly despite running out of partners after Root’s dismissal.

However, it did not stop him from scoring a magnificent century (165 off 143 balls). His blazing knock consisted of 17 fours and three sixes, respectively. As a result, by the time Duckett got out in the 48th over, England were already past the 300-run mark and eventually finished on a mammoth 351/8.

In reply, Australia too followed a similar trajectory. They lost Travis Head and skipper Steve Smith early on before Marnus Labuschagne (47 off 45 balls) partnered with Matthew Short (63 off 66 balls) to provide some stability to the Men in Yellow. At 136/4, things were looking tough for the Aussies to reach the target, it was the Jos Inglis-Alex Carey duo who stitched a 146-run stand for the fifth wicket to not only bail the team out of trouble but also almost put Australia on the brink of a record-breaking win.

Although Carey could not stay till the end to finish the job, the star of the day was the wicketkeeper-batter Inglis who scored an unbeaten century (120* off 86 balls) with Glenn Maxwell playing an explosive cameo (32 off 15 balls) to guide Australia to a historic win by five wickets with 15 balls to spare.
