Team India are all set to play Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final fixture. Notably, both teams have remained unbeaten in this tournament. While the Men in Blue are looking good, the Men in Yellow are dealing with some injury concerns and it’s affecting the squad’s balance ahead of the knockout game.

There have already been plenty of replacements within the Australian squad due to some big names getting injured. But it turns out their injury woes continue as opener Matthew Short has been ruled out of the series due to a quad injury. Short had picked up a quad injury during the washed-out game against Afghanistan.

The two-time Champions Trophy winners have not only lost an opener but also a spin option which would have been very effective on the slow and low wickets of Dubai. As a result, Australia have named the all rounder Cooper Connolly as Short’s replacement. Connolly was one of the best players for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League and has been a travelling reserve with the team.

The 21-year-old middle order batter and left-arm spinner has so far played only three ODIs for the national side. However, the worries are far from over as this situation creates a selection conundrum for the Australian team management in terms of team combination and a new opening partner for Travis Head. The Aussies could either go with Jake Fraser-McGurk for the opening slot or bring in the likes of Tanveer Sangha to balance out their spin attack with Adam Zampa being the other frontline spinner. Besides, Glenn Maxwell is already an option in the middle order.

Australia beat India in last ICC knockout game

Speaking of the performance of the Australian team though they started their Champions Trophy campaign in style, the next two games after the win against England ended in a washout. Interestingly, the Aussies have one of the best records in ICC knockout games and have won the last three knockout matches they have played against India.

Notably, the last time both teams clashed was during the ODI World Cup 2023 final where Australia got the better of India to achieve the title glory. Hence, in the upcoming semifinal, the Steve Smith-led side will look to continue that in the upcoming match in a bid to seal their Champions Trophy final berth, which will be held in Lahore.
