After the ODI World Cup 2023, Babar Azam relinquished captaincy from all formats of the game. Shan Masood was made the red-ball captain while Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as the new T20 skipper. The pacer has done a commendable job as captain in the Pakistan Super League, which played a part in him taking over the role. However, soon after that, Pakistan were humbled in the Test series against Australia and they lost a five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not show faith in Shaheen and once again appointed Babar in white-ball cricket. Under his leadership, the Men in Green locked level with New Zealand in another five-match T20I series, went on to lose to England and recently, lost to USA in their opening game of the T20 World Cup. Former cricketer Shahid Afridi has indicated that a change in captaincy has impacted Pakistan’s performance.

Speaking to Samma TV, the 47-year-old remarked that he is well aware of certain things but can’t discuss them in public. He talked through the importance of a captain in building a good team atmosphere and indirectly indicated that there’s lack of unity in the current Pakistan squad. Afridi added that he can’t dig deep since Shaheen is his son-in-law but isn’t afraid to call a spade.

“Mohammad Wasim has done a great job as a selector and knows quite a few things. Even I’m aware of certain things which aren’t spoken about openly. But what’s important is the intent of the captain. He’s the guy who keeps the team united. Whether he wants to deteriorate the team atmosphere or make an excellent unit. The coaches and support staff come later but the skipper has the main authority,” Afridi said.

“I don’t want to dig deep because if I speak about Shaheen, people will say I’m taking my son-in-law’s side. But if anything is wrong, it doesn’t if my relatives or close ones are involved, it is wrong and I don’t have to point it out. But honestly, our seniors, our selector and the board have committed big mistakes in the past,” he added.

The former cricketer also stated that he will add more substance to this matter once the T20 World Cup is over.
