Hobart Hurricanes clinched their maiden title in the 14th edition of the Big Bash League by triumphing in an emphatic seven-wicket margin with 35 deliveries to spare. What made the victory sweeter is the fact that the Hurricanes achieved the same in front of their own supporters at the Bellerive Oval.
Electing to field first, the hosts were in a tight spot with Sydney Thunder racing off to 58 without the loss of any wickets inside the powerplay. At the midway mark, they had already reached, with the openers having established themselves at the crease. However, a subsequent double-wicket over by Nathan Ellis pulled things back for the hosts. Along with the skipper, Riley Meredith ended up with a three-wicket haul as well as the Thunder ended up with 182/7 on the back of a 67-run knock by opening batter, Jason Sangha.
In response, the Hurricanes rode on a blistering start by Mitchell Owen, who was well past his half-century at the end of the batting powerplay. Interestingly, his partner at the other end had only faced a total of nine deliveries till then. A double-wicket over by Jason’s younger brother, Tanveer Sangha, did not stop come in Owen’s way as he raced towards an incredible 39-ball ton. Although the centurion got out briefly after, the damage had already been done as the Hurricanes overhauled the target in 14.1 overs.
The 23-year-old was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match accolade for his outworld-ly knock. Notably, the Thunder were denied their second BBL title.
