Aminul Islam to serve as Bangladesh Cricket Board President for next four years

Aminul Islam has been re-elected as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for a four-year term, following a brief four-month stint in the same role earlier this year. Faruque Ahmed, the former president whom Aminul had replaced in May, along with Shakhawat Hossain, will serve as vice-presidents.

The election, held on Monday, October 6, combined both physical voting and e-ballots at a hotel in Dhaka. Out of 156 eligible voters, 115 cast their votes to elect 23 board directors, while two government representatives were later added to form the 25-member governing body.

The voting process is divided into three categories. The first category, representing divisions and districts, elected ten directors, including Aminul himself. The second category, dominated by Dhaka clubs, chose 12 directors, while the third included representatives from institutions, former cricketers, and other organizations.

The election commission announced the names of the board directors at 6:30 pm, after which the newly formed board held internal elections for president and vice-presidents. Aminul, Faruque, and Shakhawat were elected to their posts unopposed.

Among the board directors are three former captains, Aminul, Faruque, and Khaled Mashud. Former left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak was also appointed unopposed from the Khulna sub-category, having recently stepped down from his role as senior men’s selector.

While the voting proceeded without major incidents, the election commission noted some allegations of intimidation. The lead-up to the election had also been marked by controversies, including the withdrawal of former captain Tamim Iqbal from the race, following concerns over interference linked to a BCB directive on fresh nominations for the first category, a letter that was cleared by the courts the day before the election.

Following his confirmation as president, Aminul expressed his desire to continue in the role, citing his passion for the development of Bangladesh cricket. Reflecting on his earlier short-term tenure, he had described it as a ‘quick T20 innings’. The former cricketer, who played 13 Tests and 39 ODIs, also captained Bangladesh during their maiden World Cup appearance in 1999.
