Chennai Super Kings (CSK) concluded their IPL 2025 season with a huge win of 83 runs against the table toppers, Gujarat Titans (GT), on May 25. However, the buzz around Captain MS Dhoni’s retirement is still fresh as the cricketer kept the audience wondering by saying, ‘I am not saying I am done, not saying I am coming back at the same time.’
This statement blew up the cricketing fraternity, leaving the fans and experts in splits regarding Dhoni’s return in IPL 2026. The 43-year-old cricketer has played in the league for 18 years and is undoubtedly one of the best in the business. However, many former cricketers debated Dhoni’s retirement after his statement, following a dismal performance by his side in this year’s campaign at the cash-rich tournament.
Speaking regarding the matter, former India cricketer Murali Kartik mentioned that it might be the right time for him to retire from IPL. Dhoni has been a successful captain with five IPL and two Champions League trophies under his belt, but the cricketer-turned commentator believes that the CSK legend has overstayed than what he should have.
“As much as the world loves Dhoni, as much as there are certain things we don’t want to end. Like we never want to see Amitabh Bachchan stop acting or Sachin Tendulkar to finish, but a day has to come when they have to go. And sometimes what happens is that you don’t want to be pushed. You don’t want even the ones who love you to say, ‘You have overstayed your welcome’,” said Kartik via Cricbuzz.
I have four-five months to decide: Dhoni
Dhoni, who was appointed as skipper once again owing to an injury to mainstay captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, was asked about his retirement plans at the post-match presentation following the Sunday clash. The Ranchi-born mentioned that it depends on his body, as he still has time to decide about his return. He stressed the fact that playing top-level cricket is important, and he cannot decide today, whether he will be able to sustain till 2026.
“Depends. I have 4-5 months to decide, there’s no hurry to decide what needs to be done. Every year, it’s 15% more effort to keep the body fit. You have to be at your best, this is top level cricket. It’s professional cricket. It’s not always performance you can count. If cricketers start retiring because of their performances, some of them will retire at the age of 22,” said MS Dhoni at the post-match presentation.
