The PSL playoffs—where legends are created and heartbreaks are documented. The Pakistan Super League has given fans some memorable knockout matches, thrilling edge-of-the-seat finishes, and shocking upsets over the years. But while fans focus on the individual brilliance, last-over drama, and public intrigue, there is another stat that fuels debate among fans—which team has reached the playoffs the most consistently? Some teams make the playoffs only occasionally, while others seem to love it so much, they make it their second home.
1. Peshawar Zalmi

If the PSL playoffs were a club, Peshawar Zalmi would have a VIP pass. With 20 playoff matches from 2016 to 2024 (the most for any franchise), they have remained consistent in qualifying and equally consistently getting into the later stages of the competition.
The 8 record wins and 12 record losses do not seem remarkable at first, but a long stay speaks for itself is worth more. They scored as high as 214 in the playoffs, and possession brings the best out for Zalmi. Having featured in numerous finals and winners of the trophy once (2017), they have plenty of playoff experience.
Although they do not have the highest win/loss ratio (0.666), they continue to qualify as a frustrated champion season after season. Whether it was the old stalwart Wahab Riaz, explosive batters Kamran Akmal or Babar Azam (later seasons), they have always served them well in the playoffs.
2. Islamabad United

Now we’ll move on to a team that’s had fewer playoff appearances but made each match count—Islamabad United. An astounding 15 matches later, they’ve won 10 of them, which gives them an extraordinary W/L ratio of 2,000, the best of all time.
True, they have not played as many playoffs matches as Zalmi, but the clinical nature of United makes them one of the more dangerous sides going into any knockout match. Their playoff average of 25.42, with a run rate of 8.68, shows you their attacking style of cricket, led over the years by Shadab Khan, Luke Ronchi, and Alex Hales.
The small matter of their lowest score of only 82 perhaps seems damaging, but overall, their playoff story is one of dominance. Islamabad is the team that does not just show up to the party—they usually leave with the trophy.
3. Karachi Kings
And then there’s the Karachi Kings, a franchise that, at first glance, does not appear to have established dominance in the playoffs. From 2016 to 2021, they had only 9 playoff appearances, winning only 2 of them.
They have the worst W/L ratio of the three, at 0.333, and their average of 21.59 suggests they have often choked under pressure. Yes, I realize they had that amazing streak when they won the title in 2020, but otherwise their journey has mainly been inconsistency and underperformance.
Karachi has never quite found its rhythm despite a host of big names over the years – Babar Azam, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, etc. Their playoff statistics are a true reflection of that struggle.
When it comes to playoff experience, Peshawar Zalmi has been there the most, they know the knockouts inside out. Islamabad United has been the best in terms of impact and efficiency. Karachi Kings have shown flashes, but for the most part, they have been disappointing.
So now the real question is, what is better: to be present more often, or to dominate whilst you are there? Perhaps in the PSL, it is both. One thing is for sure: the playoffs are a great way to differentiate the good from the great.
