Why Sri Lanka Lost to Pakistan in the Final Match of Pakistan T20I Tri-Series 2025: 3 Key Reasons Behind the Defeat

Why Sri Lanka Lost to Pakistan in the Final Match of Pakistan T20I Tri-Series 2025 3 Key Reasons Behind the Defeat

In high spirits after winning their first two preliminary games, Sri Lanka’s hopes were doused when they failed in a very avoidable manner to capitalise on many opportunities that arose during the final match vs. Pakistan. Chasing 115, Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara briefly brought excitement back to the Sri Lankan camp; however, their team eventually fell apart at critical moments, resulting in a shocking six-wicket loss for Sri Lanka with 8 deliveries remaining in the game.

Middle-Order Collapse Turned a Chase into Chaos

In the tenth over, at 84 for two, Sri Lanka’s innings was going off the rails dramatically; Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, and Dasun Shanaka were all falling early, and creating openings that Pakistan’s bowling unit would exploit mercilessly. The inability of the batsmen to get runs to rotate the strike or make something out of good starts and turn them into substantial contributions exposed how fragile their batting lineup was, with too much dependence on 59 by Mishara. Momentum is the key to success in T20 cricket, and at the wrong time, Sri Lanka lost its momentum, and what looked like an opportunity for a 115-run chase now felt like climbing Mount Everest.

Pakistan’s Bowling Performance Flipped the Match

The Pakistani bowling unit kept the pressure on Sri Lanka by consistently delivering quality bowling spells. These quality bowling spells were able to place immense pressure on the entire Lankan side, allowing Pakistan to take advantage of all of their momentum throughout the Lankan batting line-up. At the beginning of the game, Afridi had an immediate impact when he removed both Nissanka and Shanaka at extremely low costs for early wicket losses. Afterwards, Mohammad Nawaz took out the Sri Lankan middle order for three key wickets. Following this, Abrar Ahmed and Salman Mirza continued to limit how many runs could be scored. They turned the momentum, building opportunities that would have occurred for the Lankan side, into additional pressure on the Lankan side. Each time Pakistan created a breakthrough in the game, it was at a critical moment in time to provide the Lankan side with a target that they would find difficult to meet.

Tactical Misjudgments and Lack of Adaptation

In addition to the collapse and exceptional bowling by Sri Lanka, they were also unable to adapt their batting approach to the pace-friendly conditions of Rawalpindi’s pitch; as such, there were many times when shot selection was ill-advised, and the lower-order batsmen did not offer much resistance to the bowlers, with the tailenders providing virtually no contributions to run scoring. The 13 extras that were added did help; however, they could not compensate for lost singles and poorly timed shots. In addition to the over-reliance on the same handful of stars and some poor fielding, Sri Lanka put too much pressure on their opposition, allowing Pakistan to successfully navigate their chase, albeit somewhat easily and under control.

Sri Lanka started well in the beginning of their batting line-up; however, they had very little run support from the rest of their batting lineup. This ultimately led to Sri Lanka collapsing towards the end of their batting line-up and allowed Pakistan to return to winning ways easily.
