Why Nottinghamshire Choked Against Worcestershire in Vitality Blast 2025

Why Nottinghamshire Choked Against Worcestershire in Vitality Blast 2025

On a windy Nottingham night, with sixes flying and boundaries being cleared, it looked like we were in for a classic Vitality Blast bar room brawl, but it was Worcestershire who left Nottingham celebrating with some fireworks after their 25-run victory over Nottinghamshire. To say it was frustrating for Notts fans is an understatement, as Notts showed little sparks – that were glimpses of brilliance – but never managed to put together enough singles to ignite the fire. Now the dust settles, and we ask ourselves: how did they let this slip?

Nottinghamshire’s Fragile Start Put Them on the Back Foot Early

First up, let’s talk about the elephant-sized collapse in the room—Nottinghamshire’s top-order failure. In the pursuit of a high target of 207, the start, as is often the case chasing over 200, needed intent, clarity and execution; and instead they got Lyndon James spooning a catch in the first over, Moises Henriques stumped for 5 and Jack Haynes flashing and failing just as he looked settled.

Joe Clarke was trying to be the anchor, creating 31 off 24, which was decent. At 72/4 in the 11th over after his exit, the task ahead no longer seemed daunting. It became a jagged cliff. The middle-order, led by Tom Moores and Daniel Sams, had too much to do and too little stability to support it. When a team loses four wickets in the first ten overs of a 200+ chase, it’s not just written on the wall, it’s spray-painted on the scoreboard.

With an Explosive Knock, Adam Hose Overhauled the Course of the Match

Next thing you know, the hammer was smashed down by the man of the hour, Adam Hose. Worcestershire’s innings was shaky at 2/1 after only seven balls. A stunning counterattack ensued, ranking among the best in recent memory. Hose joined the group with his nerves steady and his eyes lit up with determination, smashing the ball to all parts of Trent Bridge. His explosive 95 from 51 wasn’t only a winning knock; it showcased his fierce intent.

With 7 fours and 6 massive sixes, Hose attacked every bowler he faced, before getting into a tussle with Dan Sam’s and his partner Dillon Pennington, who each conceded 48 runs. His surge, accompanied by Kashif and then Ethan Brookes, changed the momentum from their early collapse to scoreboard dominance. If we take Hose out of the picture, Notts could be chasing 170. But cricket, like life, does not use ‘could have’; it punishes the unprepared.

Leaky Bowling and Fielding Let Nottinghamshire Down

At last, Nottinghamshire fell prey to what can only be described as “the little leaks”. Death bowling? Leaky. Fielding? Patchy. Sams had a rare off day, going wicketless while leaking 12 an over. There were no breakthroughs from Conor McKerr, who also leaked at 10s. Even the spin twins Patterson-White and Harrison, whilst keeping things semi-tight, failed to break partnerships at key moments.

And we shouldn’t ignore the fielding—Henriques’ misfields and run out misses and a clear lack of energy in the outfield created the illusion that every Worcestershire boundary was a gift rather than earned. While Worcestershire’s outfielding appeared sharp—cue Adam Hose’s two clutch catches—Notts seemed to be chasing shadows.

The match wasn’t lost quickly – it was a slow disintegration. A frail top order, a Hose hurricane, and plan bowling leaks transformed a potentially great home win into a chastening experience. T20 cricket reminds us, don’t blink, not even once! The muscle came from Nottinghamshire, the momentum from Worcestershire, and Adam Hose delivered the ignition.
