Toss Doesn’t Matter: Peshawar Zalmi’s Secret to Dominating PSL

In T20 cricket, winning the toss can feel like winning half the battle. Captains are sweating over it, analysts get the numbers analyzed to the point of overkill, and fans get superstitious over it. But what if a side assumes the habit of bucking the trend and delivering the goods even when the coin doesn’t flip their way? That is exactly what Wahhmann Peshawar Zalmi is doing in the PSL.

1. Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi

With a win-loss ratio of 1.181, Peshawar Zalmi is the strongest of the three teams (Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators) when all matches played are considered, irrespective of the toss condition. Peshawar Zalmi played 49 matches, won 26 matches, lost 22 matches, and abandoned 1 match. They are consistent not only in their win-loss record, but also in their run-scoring while batting as well. Peshawar Zalmi averaged 26.66 runs per wicket at a run rate of 8.64 runs per over with a high score of 214 in the match.

Even more impressively, is the response that Zalmi has when they have to think outside the box, as is common to all toss by losing the toss means they are either aimlessly chasing under lights if in a dusk match, or batting first on a wicket that looks terrible to bat first on….their ability, one way or another Zalmi can summon some match-winning out of the box brilliance.

2. Multan Sultans

Multan Sultans

Next, we will discuss the Multan Sultans. The batting numbers for the Sultans are pretty good, on paper, with a maximum score of 262, an average of 29.40 for run outs, and a run rate of 8.80 – again, the best of the three. What the Sultans do not exhibit is the same consistency. At 55 matches, the Sultans’ record is 25 wins, 27 losses, and 1 tie, which means their total win/loss ratio is 0.925.

The Sultans have always had gutsy determination in the past, a function of their fireworks-type top order. If the partnership goes off, they can blast through any attack. If it does not, invariably, the middle will queue up as well. And the moment you change the variables by winning the toss, every method of late-in-the-game salvage is proven useless.

3. Quetta Gladiators

Quetta Gladiators

Next up is Quetta Gladiators. In the early seasons of PSL, they were one of the teams’s people were scared of playing against. However, they’ve continually lagged and have been stuck in a rebuilding phase. Quetta Gladiators have a win/loss ratio of 0.714. They’ve only won 20 times in 48 matches. Their average per wicket is 22.57, they have a run rate of 8.15, and while they have scored a monster 263 once, they have also been as low as 102.

The toss hasn’t helped them either! Their real issue is that they were slow to adapt. Quetta Gladiators get stuck in the decision-making process after the toss (about poor bowling changes or weak batting under pressure). Peshawar Zalmi embraces the fact that they may need to change mid-game and come from behind; the Quetta Gladiators blush when the toss doesn’t lean their way. The consistency and mindset of recovering from a loss in the toss haven’t been prevalent.

So, what can you say to a fan who complains about a loss at the toss? Remind them about Peshawar Zalmi. Because it isn’t about what the toss read, it is about how you play after.
