Wayne Parnell was born on July 30, 1989, in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province. He made his international debut in 2009 at the age of 19 and got a central contract from Cricket South Africa. He was the youngest cricketer to get a central contract from the board. Parnell’s best performance with the bat came against Pakistan in the first ODI of the five-match series at Sharjah in 2013. He made his only international half-century in this game. He came out to bat at a point when South Africa had lost six wickets for a mere 86 runs. Parnell had a partnership of 39 runs for the seventh wicket with JP Duminy. His 76-ball 50 helped the Proteas post a total of 183 runs on the board. Pakistan was bundled out for 182 runs and lost the match by one run. Parnell took three wickets for 41 runs and won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance.

Parnell made his T20I debut against Australia in 2009 and was picked for the T20 World Cup that year in England. When South Africa faced the West Indies in the tournament, Parnell was just five matches old in his T20I career. Parnell finished the match with four wickets for 13 runs and dismissed the likes of Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard. His bowling figures remained the best by a Proteas bowler in the T20 World Cup till 2022.

In 2009, England toured South Africa to play two T20Is, five ODIs, and four Test matches. In the third ODI, Parnell took five wickets for 48 runs in 9.3 overs, including a maiden over. It was his second five-wicket haul that year. He finished with 22 wickets in nine ODI games that year and was the second-highest wicket-taker behind Dayle Steyn.
