Top 3 performances of Ross Taylor in international cricket

Ross Taylor was one of the finest cricketers New Zealand ever produced. He is known for his elegant batting style and powerful pull shots. Taylor became the backbone of the Black Caps’ middle order for more than a decade. Whether playing at home or overseas, he consistently delivered crucial performances against the best bowling attacks in the world. By the end of his international career, Taylor had compiled an outstanding record. He scored 7683 runs in 112 Tests, 8607 runs in 236 ODIs, and 1954 runs in 106 T20Is, making him one of New Zealand’s most successful batters across formats.

Here are top three performances of Ross Taylor in international cricket:

 181* vs England, Dunedin. 2018

One of Taylor’s most remarkable ODI innings came against England in Dunedin in 2018. In the fourth ODI of the series, England posted a formidable 335/9 in 50 overs, powered by centuries from Jonny Bairstow (138) and Joe Root (102). From the New Zealand side, Ish Sodhi took 4/58 while Trent Boult and Colin Munro picked up two wickets each.

Chasing a challenging target, New Zealand needed a special innings, and Taylor delivered exactly that. Batting with tremendous composure, he smashed 181 not out off 147 balls, hitting 17 fours and six sixes at a strike rate above 123. Alongside him, Tom Latham contributed a valuable 71. Taylor’s magnificent knock guided New Zealand to victory in 49.3 overs, leaving England’s bowlers clueless despite Tom Curran taking 2/57.

290 & 36* vs Australia, Perth, 2015

Taylor’s greatest Test innings came against the mighty Australia at the WACA in Perth in 2015. On one of the toughest pitches for visiting batters, he produced a career-defining knock. Australia first posted a massive 559/9 declared, with David Warner scoring 253 and Usman Khawaja adding 121. In response, New Zealand fought back strongly. Kane Williamson scored 166, but it was Taylor who stole the show with an incredible 290 runs from 374 balls, smashing 43 boundaries.

Facing a high-quality attack featuring Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, Taylor displayed extraordinary concentration and stroke play to take New Zealand to 624 in their first innings. Although the match eventually ended in a draw, Taylor’s monumental innings remains one of the greatest knocks by a New Zealand batter in Test history.

154* & 15 vs England, Manchester, 2008

Another unforgettable performance came during New Zealand’s 2008 tour of England at Old Trafford in Manchester. In the second Test, New Zealand scored 381 in their first innings, with Taylor producing a magnificent 154 not out from 176 balls, including 17 fours and five sixes. His aggressive batting dominated the English bowlers.

England were later bowled out for 202, with Daniel Vettori claiming five wickets. However, the match eventually slipped away from New Zealand as England chased down the target in the fourth innings, with Andrew Strauss scoring a century. Despite the defeat, Taylor’s innings showcased his immense talent and established him as one of New Zealand’s most reliable middle-order batters on the international stage.
