Former West Indian bowler Joel Garner was one of the most lethal bowlers of his generation. Standing at 6’8”, he possessed the ability to torment even the toughest of batters. Garner took 259 and 146 wickets in 58 Tests and 146 wickets in 98 ODIs in what was a truly glittering international career.
1) 5/38 in 11 overs vs England (London, 1979)
Garner produced a spell for the ages to completely dismantle England at the Lord’s in the final of the World Cup 1979. Combining precision with ruthlessness, the tall quick broke the back of the batting unit with his first wicket of the match, dismissing Graham Gooch. He choked England’s run-scoring momentum and played a key role in West Indies winning their second straight World Cup.
2) 4/53 in 14.3 overs and 5/55 in 23.5 overs vs England (Birmingham, 1984)
Nine of England’s 20 wickets were taken by Garner as the two sides met in Birmingham. He claimed four-wicket haul in England’s first innings and followed it by a fifer in the second. Garner bowled with sensational precision in both of the opposition’s innings to help West Indies win the match by an innings and 180 runs.
3) 6/75 in 27.2 overs and 3/67 in 24 overs vs Australia (Georgetown, 1984)
Garner bowled with his all his heart in the series-opening contest against Australia in 1984 to end up with nine wickets to his name. Although the match ended in a draw, the right-arm pacer bowled with authority throughout the match. He rattled the top and middle order during Australia’s first innings and picked up three vital scalps in the second as well.
