Top 3 performances of Dinesh Chandimal in Test cricket

Dinesh Chandimal turned 36 years old on Tuesday, November 18. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter from Sri Lanka made his international debut in April 2010. He has spent 15 years in international cricket and is still going strong. While he has had some moments of brilliance in the white-ball formats, Chandimal’s best performances for the Island nation have come in Test matches.

He has amassed 6361 runs in 90 Tests at an average of 43.27. He has registered 34 half-centuries and 16 tons, including a highest score of 206.

Let’s take a look at Chandimal’s 3 best performances in Test cricket:

3. 155* vs Pakistan (September-October 2017)

In the first Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, Chandimal scored an unbeaten 155 off 372 balls on a low and slow surface at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. His knock paved the way for Sri Lanka’s commendable first-innings score of 419. The Lankan Lions went on to win the match by 21 runs to snatch a rare win in Abu Dhabi. Chandimal batted for over nine hours on a turning track, which was also offering uneven bounce.

2. 206* vs Sri Lanka (July 2022)

Having taken a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, Australia posted 364 in the first innings of the second Test in Galle. Sri Lanka needed a strong batting effort in reply, and their experienced batters stood up to the occasion. Chandimal scored an unbeaten 206 off 326 balls, hitting 16 fours and five sixes. Sri Lanka finished on a mammoth score of 554, taking a 190-run lead in the first innings. The Aussies were bowled out for 151 as the hosts won by an innings and 39 runs.

1. 162* vs India (August 2015)

Chandimal produced a brilliant performance against India in the first Test in Galle in August 2015. In the first innings, he scored a fighting 59 off 77 balls. India had taken a 192-run first-innings lead. Sri Lanka lost three wickets for five runs in their second innings and eventually slumped to 95/5. Chandimal played one of the best counter-attacking knocks in Test cricket, smashing an unbeaten 162 off 169 balls, with 19 fours and four sixes. The hosts went on to win the match by 63 runs, defending a 176-run target in the fourth innings, to register one of the best comebacks of all time.
