Dennis Lillee is considered as one of the greatest fast bowlers Australia has produced. His legacy consists of much more than just world-class numbers. Lillee was one of the quickest pacers going around in the generation in which he operated. His 13-year-long career was filled with loads of memorable performances.
The speedster picked up 355 wickets in Tests in the 70 matches. His average and economy rate were commendably low at 23.92 and 2.75, respectively. Lilee turned 76 on July 18, 2025. Below is a list of his top three performances in the longest format of the game:
1) 7/83 vs West Indies (1981)
Lille’s seven-wicket haul in 26.3 overs meant West Indies could only manage a slender three-run lead in the island nation’s first Test of the 1981/82 tour. As many as 96 of the 201 runs were scored by Larry Gomes (55 off 108) and Jeff Dujon (41 off 48). Both of these batters were dismissed by him.
Australia ended up winning the game by a 58-run margin as Lilee ended up with a 10-wicket haul in the match after toiling away for 27.1 overs. Despite his outstanding outing, Kim Hughes was awarded the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten ton in the first innings.
2) 7/89 vs England (1981)
All of England’s top four batters were dismissed by Lillee before he cleaned up the lower middle-order to bowl England out for 314 in response to Australia’s 352. The match ended in a draw after England lost only seven wickets in their fourth innings. Seven of those four were scalped by Lilee. This increased his wickets tally to 11 in the game. He was awarded the POTM award.
3) 6/26 vs England (1977)
Australia were off to a torrid start in the only Test against England in March 1977. They had been shot out for 138 in the first innings before England ended the opening day firmly in control on 29/1. Lillee breathed fire on the second day as he ran through the batting to end up with six wickets to his name. Lillee ended up winning the game for Australia by picking up another five in England’s run-chase of 463. He was the star performer for the hosts who ended up claiming victory by 45 runs.
