Top 3 performances of Adam Gilchrist in Tests

Top 3 performances of Adam Gilchrist in Tests

Australian great Adam Gilchrist redefined the role of a wicketkeeper-batter in world cricket. He is known for his aggressive stroke play and fearless approach, and dominated attacks across formats. While much of his brilliance was showcased in ODIs, his contributions in Test cricket were equally remarkable. Batting lower down the order, he often changed the course of matches with his counter-attacking brilliance. In 96 Tests, Gilchrist scored 5570 runs at an impressive average of 47.60, including 17 centuries and 26 fifties. Here’s a look at his top three performances in the longest format.

204* vs South Africa, Johannesburg, 2002

In the first Test of the 2002 series against South Africa, Gilchrist produced one of his finest innings. Coming in after strong contributions from Matthew Hayden (122), Mark Waugh (53), and Damien Martyn (133), Gilchrist tore apart the South African attack. He smashed an unbeaten 204 off just 213 balls, hitting 19 fours and eight sixes, as Australia declared on 652/7. South Africa were bowled out for 159 and 133 in their two innings, handing Australia a crushing victory by an innings and 360 runs.

152 vs England, Birmingham, 2001

Gilchrist’s explosive batting was on full display in the first Test of the 2001 Ashes at Birmingham. England scored 294 in their first innings, with Mike Atherton (57) and Alec Stewart (65) making key contributions before Shane Warne (5/71) cleaned up the tail. In response, Australia piled on 576 runs, thanks to fifties and centuries from Michael Slater (77), Steve Waugh (105), and Damien Martyn (105). Gilchrist played a breathtaking knock of 152 off 143 balls, featuring 20 fours and five sixes. England were dismissed for 164 in their second innings, and Australia won by an innings and 118 runs.

162 vs New Zealand, Wellington, 2005

Gilchrist produced another brilliant away century to put Australia in a commanding position against New Zealand in the 2005 Wellington Test. Australia declared their first innings at 570/8, with valuable contributions from Matthew Hayden (61), Damien Martyn (165), and Shane Warne (50*). Gilchrist was the standout performer, smashing 162 off just 146 balls, including 22 fours and five sixes. New Zealand were bowled out for 244 in their first innings and forced to follow on. However, persistent rain interruptions throughout the match prevented a result, and the contest eventually ended in a draw.
