Top 3 bowling performances of Sourav Ganguly in ODIs

The 2000’s was when Indian Cricket was in its prime and we have all enjoyed watching some of the biggest legends of the game who have given a lot for Indian cricket. One of the major icons for Indian cricket was none other than The god of the offside and legendary skipper Sourav Ganguly. He is no doubt one of the greatest batters to ever take the field and perhaps one of the best captains Indian cricket has ever had.

We all know how great of a batter Ganguly was as a batter in both red ball and white ball cricket scoring over 11000 in ODI’s and 7000+ in Test matches. The only thing we all forget is that he was a handy medium-pace bowler as well, especially in ODI’s where he has taken 100 wickets in the format. We will be looking into some of the best spells he has bowled in international cricket against some of the greatest teams in the world.

So, here are the Top 3 bowling performances from Sourav Ganguly in One-day Internationals:

3. 4/21 vs Sri Lanka in 1999

The damage was done in this Pepsi Cup match where the Indian team were up against a much stronger Sri Lankan side. Sourav Ganguly had already done the damage in the first innings scoring a great century which took the team to a great total. What the Lankans were not prepared for was Ganguly’s performance with the ball where out of nowhere he took four wickets with his medium pacers and made sure the team was bundled out for just 207 giving the Men in Blue a big win.

2. 5/34 vs Zimbabwe in 2000

The Srilankans were not the only ones who faced the wrath of Ganguly’s slow medium pacers as Ganguly created havoc against Zimbabwe where he led from the front as an Indian skipper. Ganguly first took a great 5-wicket haul in the first innings ensuring that the team was all out for just 165. The Zimbabwe batters had no answer to Ganguly’s deliveries at all. Ganguly also went on to finish the game with the bat as well.

1. 5/16 vs Pakistan in 1997

Sourav Ganguly always had a trick up his sleeve and this was evident in the game against Pakistan in Toronto. The Indian batters had struggled to score in the first innings managing only 182 in their 50 overs with only a half-century from Mohd Azharuddin to look back on. To defend this total the Indian team needed someone to create some magic and that came in the form of Ganguly who might have missed out with the bat, but delivered with the ball in hand, bowling one of the best spells of his career. Ganguly ended up with figures of 5/16 in 10 overs which resulted in the arch-rivals getting bowled out for just 148. This was also the first 5-wicket haul for Ganguly in ODI’s.
