Top 3 bowling performances of Alec Bedser in Tests

Sir Alec Victor Bedser was one of the strongest pillars of English cricket in the 20th century. In a career that spanned from 1939 to 1960, Bedser led Surrey and England with his medium-pace bowling. He has played 485 first-class matches and has taken 1924 wickets. He represented England in 51 Test matches from 1946 to 1955 and took 236 wickets.

Bedser stood out with his accuracy in line and length. His inswinger has always been a nightmare for the opposition batters. As the cricketing world remembers one of the greatest English cricketers on his birthday, let’s take a look at his best performances in Test cricket.

Here are Alec Bedser’s top 3 bowling performances in Tests

3. 6/95 vs Australia, Leeds, 1953

Bedser registered his third-best bowling figure in Test cricket during the fourth Test in Australia’s tour of England in 1953. His six-wicket haul, conceding 95 runs in 28.5 overs, helped England to bowl out Australia for 266 in their first innings. The match, however, eventually ended in a draw as England failed to defend a target of 177.

2. 7/55 vs Australia, Nottingham, 1953

In the first Test of the same series in 1953, Bedser produced a brilliant performance that tore through the Aussie batting line-up. He registered figures of 38.3-16-55-7 as Australia got bundled out for 249 runs in the first innings. However, the English batters failed to complement their bowlers’ effort as they could score only 144/10 in reply.

1. 7/44 vs Australia, Nottingham, 1953

This is a continuation of the same match. Bedser recorded his best-ever bowling figure in Test cricket in the second innings of the Nottingham Test. The right-arm medium pacer grabbed another seven-wicket haul by conceding just 44 runs to dismiss Australia for 123 runs. England had to chase 229 runs in the final innings but they could manage only 120 runs, resulting in the match ending in a draw.
