T20 World Cup 2026: 3 players underutilised by South Africa

T20 World Cup 2026: 3 players underutilised by South Africa

South Africa enjoyed a solid campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with several players stepping up at crucial moments. However, the depth of the South African team meant that a few talented names did not get the opportunities they perhaps deserved.

Here are three players who were underutilised during the tournament:

  1. Kwena Maphaka

The young left-arm pacer was one of the most exciting prospects in South Africa’s squad. Known for his ability to swing the new ball and generate sharp pace, Maphaka could have offered a different dimension to the Proteas’ bowling attack. However, with the team management relying heavily on experienced options, the teenager saw very limited involvement during the tournament.

He played two matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, while picking up two wickets. He could have been used more but with Ngidi and Rabada already in their arsenal, it was not needed for the Proteas.

  1. Corbin Bosch

Corbin Bosch provided South Africa with a handy seam-bowling all-round option but was largely overlooked with the bat. While the Proteas had a settled top and middle order, Bosch’s power-hitting ability could have been useful in finishing situations.

He picked up 11 wickets with the ball, but got to bat for only two times in the competition. He has the ability to clear ropes, and could have made an impact with the bat as well.

  1. Anrich Nortje

One of the fastest bowlers in world cricket, Anrich Nortje’s limited usage raised eyebrows. With his express pace and ability to strike in the middle overs, Nortje could have been a major weapon.

Despite being part of the squad, he featured sparingly as the team preferred other pace options, making him arguably the most underutilised South African player of the tournament. Nortje only managed to play two matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, picking up three wickets.
