In reply, England scored 290 runs to take a lead of 99 runs and steal the march. Rohit Sharma showed tremendous restraint as he saw off the new ball attack consisting of James Anderson, Chris Woakes, and Moeen Ali. The right-handed batter scored 127 off 256 balls with 14 fours and one six to help India win the game. Rohit reached his ton with a six off Moeen Ali as every member of the Indian cricket team applauded the innings.

Having lost the first Test match in Chennai against England, the hosts needed to rebound in the second game. India batted first on a pitch that was turning square from the first day. The hosts were able to reach 329 in their first innings as Rohit Sharma gave a batting masterclass on a minefield of a wicket. Rohit scored 161 off 231 balls with 18 fours and two sixes and added 162 runs for the fourth wicket with Rahane. India eventually won the game by 317 and also won the series 3-1 and qualified for the first-ever WTC finals.
