Predicted Playing XI of Sri Lanka in 2nd T20I against England

Sri Lanka will aim to bounce back when they face England in the second T20I of the three-match series at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on September 17. The visitors were comprehensively beaten by 119 runs in the series opener at Southampton and will need significant improvement across departments to keep the series alive.

England produced a dominant all-round display in the first T20I, posting 254/4 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 135 in 19 overs. Harry Brook led the way with an unbeaten 114 off 49 balls, while Jos Buttler smashed 80 from 44 deliveries. Sonny Baker then starred with the ball, claiming 3/12.

Sri Lanka’s batting, meanwhile, struggled badly in the powerplay. Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara and Lahiru Udara were all dismissed inside the first six overs as the visitors slipped to 32/3. Captain Charith Asalanka was also dismissed for a single-digit score, leaving Sri Lanka with too much ground to make up.

With the same 15-member squad available for the T20I series, Sri Lanka could retain most of their combination for the Cardiff encounter. Kusal Mendis is unavailable because of a hamstring injury, with Asalanka continuing as captain.

Here is Sri Lanka’s predicted playing XI for the second T20I against England:

1. Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka is expected to retain his place at the top of the order despite a disappointing outing in Southampton. The opener was dismissed for just four runs in the first T20I, but his importance to Sri Lanka’s batting makes him a key part of the combination.

Nissanka’s ability to construct an innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate could be crucial in Cardiff. Sri Lanka will want him to spend more time at the crease in the second game.

2. Kamil Mishara

Kamil Mishara should continue as Nissanka’s opening partner. The left-hander made just six runs in the series opener before Sonny Baker dismissed him, but the team is likely to give him another opportunity.

Mishara’s attacking approach can be valuable in the powerplay, particularly if Sri Lanka want to put England’s new-ball bowlers under pressure.

3. Lahiru Udara (WK)

Lahiru Udara is likely to continue at No. 3 and take responsibility behind the stumps. He scored just one run in the first T20I, falling to Josh Tongue during Sri Lanka’s early collapse.

The wicketkeeper-batter has been included specifically in the T20I squad and could be given another opportunity to establish himself at international level.

4. Charith Asalanka (C)

Charith Asalanka will continue to lead Sri Lanka in the absence of Kusal Mendis. The left-hander had a difficult opening game, scoring only five before being dismissed by Liam Dawson.

As captain, Asalanka has an additional responsibility to provide stability in the middle order. Sri Lanka will need a substantial contribution from him if they are to challenge England’s powerful batting unit.

5. Kamindu Mendis

Kamindu Mendis should retain his position in the middle order. He made only five runs in the first T20I, but his ability to contribute with both bat and ball provides Sri Lanka with valuable flexibility.

His ambidextrous spin also gives Asalanka an additional option if the Cardiff surface offers assistance to slower bowlers.

6. Dasun Shanaka

Dasun Shanaka is expected to remain at No. 6 as Sri Lanka’s experienced finisher. He scored seven runs in the first T20I but can provide a significant boost during the latter stages of an innings.

His medium-pace bowling also gives Sri Lanka another option when managing the workload of their frontline bowlers.

7. Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga remains one of Sri Lanka’s most important T20 players. He claimed Jos Buttler’s wicket in the opening game and will be expected to play a bigger role with both bat and ball in Cardiff.

His leg-spin could be particularly important against England’s aggressive middle order.

8. Dunith Wellalage

Dunith Wellalage was one of the few bright spots for Sri Lanka in the first T20I. He top-scored with a fighting 33 off 21 balls and also dismissed England debutant Aneurin Donald.

His all-round ability makes him an important component of the XI, particularly with Sri Lanka needing greater depth.

9. Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana is likely to retain his place as Sri Lanka’s frontline powerplay spinner. He conceded 27 runs from two overs in Southampton without taking a wicket, but his variations remain valuable against England’s aggressive top order.

Sri Lanka could use him more strategically in Cardiff.

10. Dushmantha Chameera

Dushmantha Chameera should continue to lead the pace attack. The experienced quick conceded heavily in the opening game but can generate pace and bounce in English conditions.

Sri Lanka will need him to provide breakthroughs with the new ball and execute better at the death.

11. Eshan Malinga

Eshan Malinga is likely to complete the bowling attack. The young pacer conceded 20 runs from two overs in Southampton and also scored a quick unbeaten 13 off five balls.

His ability to generate pace and attack the stumps could make him an important weapon as Sri Lanka look to contain England’s deep batting lineup.

Predicted Playing XI:

Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Lahiru Udara (WK), Charith Asalanka (C), Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga.
