OTD: When Was Kevein O'Brien Born and Why Is He Ireland's Batting Legend?

When Was Kevein O’Brien Born? Kevin O’Brien was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 4, 1984. Over the years, he emerged as one of the most influential cricketers in Ireland’s history, playing a pivotal role in the nation’s rise on the international stage.

His defining moment came during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup against England in Bengaluru. Chasing a daunting target of 327, Ireland were in serious trouble before O’Brien produced one of the greatest counterattacks in World Cup history. He smashed a breathtaking 50-ball century — the fastest hundred in World Cup history at the time — turning the match on its head and guiding Ireland to a famous victory.

That innings not only stunned England but also elevated Ireland’s status in world cricket, accelerating their push toward greater international recognition.

Powerfully built and naturally aggressive, O’Brien became the poster figure of Irish cricket during a transformative era. Beyond international cricket, he featured in multiple domestic circuits, representing four English counties and playing T20 leagues in Bangladesh, the West Indies, and New Zealand. Despite global opportunities, his loyalty to Cricket Ireland remained unwavering.

During a period when Ireland had limited fixtures against Full Member nations, O’Brien continued delivering consistent performances. In September 2014, he captained Ireland to an ODI series win over Scotland, scoring consecutive half-centuries to lead from the front.

More than just an explosive batter, he was also a clever medium-pace bowler, developing valuable variations through his experiences in global T20 competitions. He is the younger brother of fellow Ireland international Niall O’Brien, though Kevin is widely known for his relaxed and laid-back personality.
