OTD Umesh Yadav was born in 1987

Indian right-arm fast bowler Umesh Yadav was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra on October 25, 1987. Growing up in Vidarbha, Yadav’s cricket journey began with a leather ball, and he even bowled against legends like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the Duleep Trophy.

Despite his talent, he did not play for major Ranji Trophy teams such as Maharashtra, representing Vidarbha in the Plate League instead. Initially, Yadav aspired to become a police officer, but fate steered him towards cricket, where his pace and aggression quickly became his trademark.

He consistently bowls at speeds exceeding 140 km/h, can move the ball both ways, and possesses a sharp bouncer, skills that earned him recognition in his debut Ranji season of 2008-09, where he claimed 20 wickets at an average of 14.60 across four matches for Vidarbha.

His breakthrough on the global stage came through the IPL in 2010, representing Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). That same year, he travelled to the West Indies for the T20 World Cup and was soon called up for India’s Test tour of South Africa in November.

He made his Test debut against the West Indies in Delhi in November 2011, taking nine wickets in his first two matches, which secured him a place for the subsequent tour of Australia. Yadav finished that series with 14 wickets from four Tests.

While the numbers were modest, his raw pace and aggressive style drew praise. Injuries interrupted his career in 2012 and he was part of the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. However, he returned strongly for the 2014 Australia Tests and emerged as one of India’s frontline pacers in the 2015 World Cup, finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker with 18 wickets at an average of 17.83.

As of now, Yadav has taken 170 Test wickets, 106 ODI wickets, and 12 wickets in nine T20Is. He continues to play, last appearing for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 and representing Vidarbha in domestic cricket. His pace and determination remain integral to Indian cricket, as he continues striving to revive his career.
