OTD | Sri Lanka recorded the highest total of 398 in one-day internationals at the time in 1996

On this day, back on March 6, 1996, the Sri Lanka cricket team made history in the cricketing world by recording the highest total in ODIs at that time, hammering an impressive 398 runs for the loss of just five wickets against Kenya during the 28th game of the Wills World Cup.

This thriller took place at Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The innings were marked by exceptional batting performances, with Aravinda de Silva being the standout player, hammering 145 runs off 115 balls featuring 14 boundaries and five towering sixes, showcasing his mastery over Kenyan bowlers.

This was not only his fourth ODI century but also marked his first against Kenya, earning him the Player of the Match award. The Sri Lankan batting lineup was formidable, with the main players contributing significantly to a record-breaking total. Asanka Gurusinha hammered 84 off 103 balls featuring seven boundaries and three sixes, while Arjuna Ranatunga gave a late surge in the game with 75 not out from just 40 balls featuring 13 boundaries and a six with a slow strike rate of 187.50.

In addition, Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana played crucial knocks of 44 and 33 runs, respectively. The formidable stand between de Silva and Gurusinha was notable as they shared a 183-run stand for the third wicket, which was the highest for Sri Lanka in ODIs at that time.

Their aggressive batting strategy, which included taking advantage of fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs of the game, was a hallmark of Sri Lanka’s approach during the marquee event.

It’s worth noting that Sri Lanka’s monumental score of 398/5 not only surpassed England’s previous record of 363/7 against Pakistan in 1992 but also set a new benchmark for ODIs. This record stood until March 12, 2006, when both Australia and South Africa broke this record.

Meanwhile, the game against Kenya ended with Lanka Lions winning with 144 runs as Kenya was just able to rack up 254/7 in their 50 overs of the game with Steve Tikolo amassing 96 as the leading run-scorer of the game.
