Indian women’s cricket witnessed a new dawn with the rise of Shafali Verma, a fearless, hard-hitting opener who brought a refreshing attacking intent to the game. Bursting onto the scene as a teenager, Shafali’s domestic and club performances quickly earned her a national call-up. She soon became the youngest Indian woman to play a T20 International, and on November 9, 2019, she etched her name in history by becoming the youngest Indian, male or female, to register an international half-century.
The memorable feat came against West Indies Women in the first T20I at Gros Islet. India Women, batting first, posted a commanding total of 185/4, with Shafali leading the charge. The then 15-year-old sensation smashed 73 runs off 49 balls, studded with six fours and four sixes, showcasing her clean hitting and composure beyond her years.
Partnering with Smriti Mandhana, who struck a fluent 67 off 46 of her own, Shafali helped India register their highest-ever opening partnership in women’s T20Is, putting on 143 runs off just 93 deliveries.
Shafali had a quiet first over before shifting gears in the second, taking on Shakera Selman for two fours and a six. Her most explosive over came against Chinelle Henry, whom she dispatched for four boundaries and a six, displaying her full range of attacking shots. For West Indies, Shakera Selman (2/36) and Anisa Mohammed (2/35) were the only bowlers to find some success amidst the onslaught.
In response, West Indies faltered under pressure and could only manage 101/9 in their 20 overs. Shemaine Campbelle top-scored with 33, while the Indian bowlers, Shikha Pandey (2/22), Radha Yadav (2/10), and Poonam Yadav (2/24), dismantled the hosts’ batting lineup.
Shafali was rightfully named Player of the Match for her record-breaking knock, helping India take a 1–0 lead before going on to whitewash the hosts 5-0 in the series.
Since that landmark innings, Shafali has gone on to become a key player across formats. In 90 T20Is, she has amassed 2221 runs, alongside 741 runs in 21 ODIs and 567 runs in five Tests at an impressive average of 63, continuing to redefine the face of Indian women’s cricket.
