OTD: Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest man to make a Test fifty

A 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest man to score a Test fifty on this day in 1989. The feat came during the second Test between India and Pakistan in Faisalabad, recording the first glimpse of the batting prodigy who went on to become one of the game’s greatest batters.

India had entered the series with a young squad and a teenage debutant, including Tendulkar. The right-handed batter had already made his debut in the opening Test in Karachi, but it was in Faisalabad where he first reached the 50-run mark.

The match witnessed the Indian batting order struggling to tackle Pakistan’s quality attack, including Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Tendulkar walked in at the score of 101/4 to join Sanjay Manjrekar.

Facing a strong trio, the teenager found gaps with ease and hammered the opposition bowlers to all parts of the ground. Tendulkar eventually scored 59, his maiden Test fifty, and stitched a crucial 143-run partnership with Manjrekar (76). Their stand helped the visitors recover from a tough position and stay in the contest. Though he was eventually dismissed by Younis.

At just 16 years of age, Tendulkar became the youngest batter in men’s Test cricket history to reach the milestone. Following his next 24 years in international cricket, he went on to score 34,357 international runs, the most by any player, including 100 international centuries. His achievements earned him the tag of “Master Blaster,” and in 2019, he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, becoming only the sixth Indian to receive the honour.
