OTD | Richard Hadlee played his last Test for New Zealand in 1990

Richard Hadlee played his last Test for New Zealand on July 10 in 1990,  Regarded as one of the greatest Test bowlers and a great bowling All-rounder, the New Zealand cricketer played a key role in his team’s major wins in England and Australia.

Hadlee made his debut for New Zealand in 1973 against Pakistan and had a decent outing with the ball. While he scored 46 runs in the only innings he batted, the right-arm pacer claimed 2/84 and 0/28 with the ball. Initially a tearaway fast bowler, Hadlee was suggested to work on skills, which helped him big time as he swung and got the ball to move off the deck.

From 1979 till his retirement, Hadlee was arguably the greatest bowler across Tests and ODIs. His last Test in July 1990 was against England in Edgbaston. Batting first, England scored 435 on the back of Graham Gooch’s 154. In reply, New Zealand managed just 249.

In the second innings, England scored 158, while the Kiwis were dismissed for 230. Hadlee performed well with the ball and showed he still had enough in him to perform at the highest level. Hadlee took 3/97 in 37.5 overs in the first innings and claimed 5/53 in 21 overs in the second. However, England won the match by 114 runs.

Hadlee played 86 Tests and claimed 431 wickets at an average of 22.30 and a strike rate of 50.85, including 36 fifers and nine ten-wicket hauls. With the bat, he added 3124 runs at an average of 27.17, including 15 fifties and two hundreds. In ODIs, he claimed 158 wickets in 115 matches at an average of 21.56, including five fifers. He also scored 1751 runs at an average of 21.62.
