OTD Pakistan’s maiden Test victory in 1952

OTD Pakistan's maiden Test victory in 1952

October 26 was a proud day for Pakistani cricket as they defeated India by an innings and 43 runs to win their first-ever Test match. It was one of the greatest performances by the South Asian powerhouses, who defeated their fiercest opponents in the match.

Though India and Pakistan were partitioned in 1948 and became independent nations that year, it was not until 1952 that Pakistan formed its Test team and toured India for a five-Test series to start their Test journey. Several players like Gul Mohammad and Abdul Kardar, who formerly played for India, turned out for Pakistan in this series, with Kardar captaining Pakistan.

They played their first-ever Test in Delhi from October 16 and saw India win the match by an innings and 70 runs. India scored 372 and bowled Pakistan out for 150 and 152.

However, Pakistan stunned the cricketing world by defeating India in the second Test, which was played at the University Ground in Lucknow.

Lala Amarnath won the toss and chose to bat first. However, Pakistan great pacer Fazal Mahmood took 5/52 as India were routed for 106 runs in their first innings, with Pankaj Roy top-scoring with 30 runs.

In reply, Nazar Mohammad made an unbeaten 124 in 515 minutes, while Maqsood Ahmed (41) and Zulfiqar Ahmed (36) made crucial contributions as Pakistan posted 331 runs in their first innings. For India, Shah Nyaichand and Ghulam Ahmed took three wickets each.

India did a little better in the second innings but could not overhaul Pakistan’s first innings score. The managed 182, with Lala Amarnath making 61* and Datta Gaekwad 32. Fazal Mahmood was the chief destroyer, taking 7/42 in the second innings and taking 12 wickets in the match.

Pakistan won the game by an innings and 43 runs, registering their historic maiden Test win in only their second game in the format.
