OTD | Nawroz Mangal was born in 1984

Nawroz Mangal was born in Afghanistan’s Kabul on July 15 in 1984. Mangal was the skipper of the Afghanistan team when they got their ODI status in 2009 and qualified for the T20 World Cup in 2010. An anchor by nature, Mangal was known for bringing stability to the innings in the middle order

Mangal grew up in the Pakistani refugee camps, where he learnt cricket. Taj Malik, the then Afghanistan coach, spotted Mangal’s talent and wished to nurture him. However, his father didn’t think cricket to be a great career option and was against it. Malik pleaded with Mangal’s father for days and nights before convincing him to take up cricket.

Mangal represented his national side in 49 ODIs and 32 T20Is. He was someone who could anchor the innings and bowl a bit when needed. In ODIs, Mangal scored 1139 runs in 48 innings at an average of 27.11, at a strike rate of 75.33, including two hundreds and four fifties. With the ball, he claimed eight wickets at an average of 29.37.

In T20Is, Mangal scored 505 runs in 32 innings at an average of 18.03 at a strike rate of 111.47, including two fifties. With the ball, he claimed four wickets in six innings, at an average of 20.00, strike rate of 15.00, with best figures of 3/23. Apart from Afghanistan, he played for teams like Asia Lions and Afghan Wireless Cricket Club.

In Afghanistan, he was regarded a national hero, as under his leadership, the national side achieved some major milestones. In the process, he inspired several young cricketers to take up cricket, which eventually helped the growth of Afghanistan cricket. He remains one of the biggest cricket icons for Afghanistan.
