Mohammed Shami, one of India’s best fast bowlers, celebrates his birthday on September 3. Shami was born in 1990 in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, India. However, with no scope for cricket opportunities in UP cricket, he moved to Bengal and grew as a bowler in the eastern part of the country.
With his deadly speed, accurate line and length, and ability to swing the ball both ways, Shami has made a name for himself as an essential member of the Indian cricket team in the 2010s and 2020s.
Shami made his senior debut for Bengal in 2010 and picked up four wickets in a T20 match, and his First-Class debut came against Assam. He then impressed with his pace, line, and length on the India A tour of the West Indies and was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2011. His 28 wickets in the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season led to his India Test debut against the West Indies in 2013, the Sachin Tendulkar farewell series.
Shami made his debut at his home ground in Kolkata and picked up five wickets in an innings in his first outing. He had made his India ODI debut in January against Pakistan, and his T20I debut also came against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2014 in Dhaka.
He became a permanent part of the Indian team after Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra’s retirements and played in the ICC World Cup 2015 despite a knee injury. He continued to be India’s strike bowler in Tests and ODIs, but success in T20s has eluded him, with the pacer having only 27 wickets in 25 T20Is.
Mohammed Shami – King of Tests and ODIs for India
Test cricket and ODI cricket are where Shami has excelled. He has 229 wickets with a best of 6/56 in 64 Tests while Shami has taken 206 wickets with a best of 7/57 in 108 ODIs. He is the only Indian bowler to take seven wickets in an ODI. Shami also has a hat-trick in the ICC World Cup, a feat he achieved in the 2019 World Cup against Afghanistan.
Shami’s crowning glory came in the ICC World Cup 2023, when he blew away oppositions with 24 wickets in seven games with an economy of 5.26 and best bowling of 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final of the tournament.
In Test cricket, he was at the forefront of India’s historic 2018-19 Test series win over Australia in Australia. He was recently in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 winning team, and while he is currently being haunted by injuries, expect Shami to make a comeback shortly.
