OTD Mohammad Abbas became first fast bowler to take ten-wicket haul in UAE

OTD Mohammad Abbas became first fast bowler to take ten-wicket haul in UAE

In 2018, Australia travelled to the UAE to play a multi-format series against Pakistan consisting of two Test matches, three T20Is, and five ODIs. Australia faced the UAE in a T20I game as well and won the same. Meanwhile, the first Test against Pakistan was played on October 7 in Dubai and ended in a draw.

The second Test was played in Abu Dhabi, and Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat as Fakhar Zaman and Sarfaraz Ahmed scored 94 runs each to take Pakistan to 282. Nathan Lyon took four wickets for 78 runs and was the pick of the bowlers for Australia.

Later, Mohammad Abbas took five wickets as Australia were bundled out for 145 runs with none of the batters scoring more than 40. In the second innings, Pakistan declared their innings on 400 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Babar Azam made 99 runs and missed a well-deserved century by just one run.

Australia needed 538 runs to win the match and to make matters worse, Usman Khawaja sustained a knee injury during warm-up and didn’t come out to open the innings for the team. At the end of day three, Australia had made 47 runs for the loss of one wicket.

In the second innings, Australia didn’t have the answers for Abbas’s bowling and kept losing wickets.

The match was concluded on October 19, and Australia were bundled out for 164 runs as Pakistan won the match by 373 runs. Abbas took another five-wicket haul in the second innings and became the first pacer to take 10 wickets in a Test match in the UAE. A total of eight bowlers have taken a 10-wicket haul in the UAE so far, and Abbas is to date the only fast bowler to do so.
