OTD: Martin Guptill was born in 1986

Martin Guptill was born on September 30, 1986, in Auckland, New Zealand. At the age of 13, Guptill was involved in a forklift accident and lost three toes on his left foot. His teammates on the New Zealand side gave him the nickname “Two Toes”.

Guptill played all three formats for the Blackcaps. His Test debut happened against India in 2009 in Hamilton. He played his last Test against India in 2016 in Indore. Guptill played a total of 47 Test matches for New Zealand and scored 2586 runs at an average of 29.38. He made three centuries and 17 half-centuries in Test cricket.

His ODI debut was against the West Indies in 2009 in Auckland. Guptill became the first batter to hit a century on debut in ODIs. He remained unbeaten on 122 runs off 135 deliveries. He played 198 ODI games for New Zealand and finished as the third-highest run-scorer behind Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming. He played his last ODI game against Australia in 2022.

Guptill finished as the highest run-scorer in T20Is. He is the first and only batter to score over 3000 runs in T20Is for New Zealand. Guptill made his T20I debut in 2009 against Australia and was dismissed for a duck. He scored 3531 runs in 122 T20I matches at an average of 31.81 and a strike rate of 135.70. He scored two centuries and 20 half-centuries in T20Is.

Guptill made his IPL debut in 2016 with Mumbai Indians and featured in three games. He played for Punjab Kings in 2017 and for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019. He played a total 13 matches in IPL and scored 270 runs in IPL at a strike rate of 137.75. He played in all the major T20 leagues like PSL, ILT20, CPL, MLC, BBL, and T20 Blast.
