Jason Jonathan Roy was born in Durban, South Africa, on July 21, 1990. He moved to England with his family when he was 10 years old. Early on, Roy played alongside future Surrey teammate and England cricketer Rory Burns, who is the same age. In 2007, he took part in the Surrey Under-19 tour to South Africa, where he top-scored for his team with an innings of 51 in a one-day match against Western Province Under-19s.
Roy made his debut for Surrey’s first team in a Twenty20 Cup match against Middlesex on June 27, 2008. Later that year, he was used as a substitute fielder by England during the final Test of the 2008 series against South Africa at The Oval. Over the years, Roy has also been part of several T20 franchise leagues around the world.
In September 2014, Roy made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against India in the only T20I of the series, where he was dismissed for eight runs. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut for England in a one-off match against Ireland in 2015; however, the game was abandoned due to rain. Later that year, Roy participated in a five-match ODI series against New Zealand in June 2015, scoring 98 runs across the series.
Following this, Roy played a T20I against Australia and took part in a subsequent five-match ODI series. He scored 11 runs in the T20I and scored 201 runs in the ODIs. Although England lost the series 2-3, Roy demonstrated his potential as a talented batter. To date, Roy has scored 4,271 runs in 110 ODI innings and 1,522 runs in 64 T20I innings. He has also appeared in five Test matches.
Roy was an integral part of England’s squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. As a powerful opening batter, he scored 443 runs in seven innings at a striking rate of 115.36. His outstanding performances earned him a place in the ICC’s Team of the Tournament alongside India’s Rohit Sharma.
One of Roy’s memorable achievements came in 2016 when he and Alex Hales put together an opening partnership of 256 runs against Sri Lanka. This was the highest successful run chase without losing a wicket in ODIs at the time and remains the highest partnership for England for any wicket in ODIs. Additionally, Roy scored 180 runs off 151 balls in an ODI against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he partnered with Joe Root for England’s highest ever third-wicket partnership of 221 runs.
Roy’s aggressive batting style, combined with his consistency, has made him a key player for England in limited-overs cricket and a fan favorite worldwide.
